Wesbank Raceway 2005 - I'm up against my boet, Pieter, in his first Uno Turbo

1st Conversion - Turbo Boost Tech - Dion Kitchenbrand

I decided to take my Japanese work of art, the GTiR motor, to Dion for fitment. I'm not going to go into too much details, but I burnt my fingers and will never recommend any person to him. R40000 and 7 Months later, my car ran bearings due to a juvenile mistake made on his or his mechanics part. They had the crank grinded due to some minor scratches, and ended up fitting the stock size bearings. Needless to say, I needed a new engine!

Valuable lesson in  purchasing - check the condition of the oil BEFORE you buy!

The engine was in terrible shape. The oil turned into a tar and is a clear indication that the person who had it before me rarely if ever changed the oil. The cam lobes and rockers were worn out. The No.4 sleeve was rusted to hell. I had to replace the cams with "custom" ones as this was the only SR20 that had the solid lifter setup. I had to re-sleeve the block. Luckily, the pistons, rods and turbo were all in good shape.

Import LSD box was bought for the conversion. Unfortunately after spending much $$ on CV's I eventually gave up and bought a complete stock STi box...

The aluminum pipe coming off the turbo was slightly modified to fit the boost pipes. Engine bay is full of wiring from the Mr Turbo EFI management system.

Some more pics of the wiring. Intercooler in it's place, looking damn nice...

New cams installed. Boost pipe cut off to be modified. Another nice view of the cooler.

Ultimately, I waited 7 months to get the car back. This was my daily drive so I had to catch lifts, beg and borrow for the entire time. I was told by Dion to source my own parts if something was missing. I cant remember why I took my car there in the first place, I could have, and should have just done everything myself. The one time I told him that I really need the car for work, I was told that I should rather take my car (engine still far from complete) somewhere else. Yeah, very mature... Now I see he works on Theo Knipe and Jerry Sonny's cars, I truly pity them and Speed n Sound as their sponsor.

Enough complaining, lets move on...

2nd Conversion - JDM Tuning - Jakes Hamman

Coming back from a 17 Second run, Jakes walked up to me in the pit area of Wesbank Raceway, and I'll never forget his words. "Turn off your engine, you've got bearing knock!" I said what? Dion told me its the shims? Needless to say, I towed my car home and the following day towed it to Jakes. I didn't expect him to immediately start work on my car, as he obviously had other customers. The day after I took it there, he called me and told me that it definitely ran bearings and I'll need new Rods and possibly crank.

After I looked around for replacement parts, I decided it was going to be cheaper to buy a new engine. I picked one up from Derm, cheap as chips and so new, the oil was still yellow. (If you don't believe me, click on the first pic below)

All the turbo goodies were bolted onto the new motor. I had the head ported and matched by Derm so that the GTiR throttles would fit the stock head.

The engine I bought was in immaculate condition. The engine oil was still clean and the intake manifold was spotless, although I opted to use the individual throttles instead.

We first had the original GTiR head on the stock block, but the car still sounded like a diesel so I decided to rather go with the stock head.

Here are some pics after the fitment...

  3rd Conversion - MWAD Systems - Derm

The time came for some upgrades. I'm changing to a new Turbo, Intercooler, Wastegate, Branch, Boost Pipes, Intake Manifold, Throttle Body, Injectors, Fuel Rail and Fuel Delivery System. Here are some pics on the progress.

This is very close to completion. Keep checking back for updates!
